ChatGPT Ads Are Now in India. But Should Marketers Start Spending?
For years, Indian marketers have had two obvious places to fight for customer attention:
-
Google: when people search.
-
Meta: when people scroll.
Now there is a new player entering the conversation.
ChatGPT.
OpenAI has started rolling out ads to ChatGPT users in India on the Free and Go plans, and self-serve Ads Manager became available to Indian businesses on September 4. OpenAI says the advertising platform is already expanding globally, with India among the latest markets to get direct advertiser access.
And honestly, I think this is much bigger than just “another ad platform.”
Because people are not searching the same way anymore.
Think about the difference.
On Google, a customer might search:
They get results.
They open multiple websites.
They compare prices.
They read reviews.
They make a decision.
On ChatGPT, the same customer might ask:
“I have sensitive skin and a budget of ₹2,000. Which skincare brands should I consider?”
That is a completely different type of intent.
The customer isn't simply asking for a link.
They are asking for help making a decision.
And that is where ChatGPT Ads become interesting for performance marketers.
ChatGPT Ads are not just another Google Ads alternative
I don't think marketers should look at ChatGPT Ads and immediately say:
“Great. Another platform where we can put our budget.”
That's the wrong mindset.
Google Ads is heavily built around search intent.
Meta is heavily built around audience, behaviour and discovery.
ChatGPT introduces something different:
Conversational intent.
The user is already explaining what they want, what they need, what they are comparing and sometimes even what their budget is.
That creates a very different advertising environment.
But here is the important part…
The ad isn't the only thing competing for attention.
The answer itself matters.
Imagine someone asks:
“What are the best digital marketing companies for an e-commerce brand in India?”
If ChatGPT recommends five companies and your company isn't among them, having an ad underneath that conversation may not automatically solve the problem.
This is where I believe the next phase of digital marketing gets interesting.
Paid visibility and organic AI visibility will start working closer together.
This is where Performance Marketing needs to evolve
Traditional performance marketing often focuses on:
Impressions → Clicks → Leads → Sales → ROAS
But AI-driven discovery adds another layer:
Does the customer discover your brand in the first place?
Does AI understand your brand?
Does your website clearly explain what you offer?
Is your content useful?
Are your reviews strong?
Are your brand mentions consistent?
Do third-party sources support your positioning?
Can AI systems understand your products and services?
Because getting the click is only one part of the journey.
Being considered is becoming equally important.
Should Indian businesses start advertising on ChatGPT?
My answer:
Test it. Don't blindly scale it.
ChatGPT Ads is still a new advertising channel.
That means marketers have an opportunity to learn before the platform becomes crowded.
But I wouldn't recommend taking your entire Google or Meta budget and moving it to ChatGPT.
Instead:
Start small.
Test relevant audiences and conversational contexts.
Measure engagement.
Track qualified traffic.
Look at conversions.
Compare customer quality.
And most importantly, understand which conversations actually lead to business outcomes.
The current entry point is relatively accessible, with reporting around a ₹725 minimum daily budget for self-serve campaigns in India. That makes experimentation possible for many businesses without committing a massive media budget.
And this is where agencies have to change too
A Performance marketing agency can't simply become a team that manages another Ads Manager.
The job is becoming much broader.
We need to understand:
Paid media
-
Customer intent
-
Creative
-
Landing pages
-
CRO
-
SEO
-
AI visibility
-
Analytics
-
Business economics
Because if the customer sees your ad but doesn't trust your brand, the campaign still fails.
If the customer discovers your brand organically through AI but your website doesn't convert, the campaign still fails.
If you generate leads but your sales team cannot close them, the campaign still fails.
Performance marketing has always been about business outcomes.
AI doesn't change that.
It just gives us another environment in which those outcomes have to be created.
Is ChatGPT going to replace Google Ads?
I don't think so.
At least not anytime soon.
Google still owns an enormous part of commercial search behaviour.
Meta still has massive reach and powerful discovery capabilities.
But ChatGPT is creating a new type of digital behaviour:
People are asking before they search.
And that's the part marketers shouldn't ignore.
OpenAI's CFO recently described the company's advertising ambition as combining elements of Google and Meta, a sign that OpenAI sees conversational advertising as a major advertising opportunity rather than a small experiment.
The bigger opportunity isn't just ChatGPT Ads
This is the part I find most interesting.
ChatGPT Ads may be the beginning of a much bigger shift.
For years, marketers asked:
“How do I rank on Google?”
Then:
“How do I get cheaper clicks?”
Then:
“How do I improve ROAS?”
Now another question is emerging:
“How do I make my brand discoverable when customers ask AI what they should choose?”
That's a much bigger question.
And it means a modern Digital Marketing company needs to think beyond individual channels.
The future may not be:
SEO vs Paid Ads
or
Google vs Meta
or
Organic vs Performance Marketing.
It may be about building a digital presence strong enough to work across search engines, social platforms, advertising networks and AI assistants.
My advice to marketers in India
Don't panic.
Don't move your entire budget.
Don't ignore it either.
Experiment.
Learn how ChatGPT Ads work.
Understand conversational intent.
Improve your website and product information.
Build stronger brand authority.
Create content that genuinely answers customer questions.
Connect your paid media with SEO, CRO and analytics.
And measure what actually contributes to revenue.
Because the next generation of performance marketing may not be about simply getting people to click.
It may be about becoming the brand they are recommended to consider in the first place.
ChatGPT Ads are now in India.
The real question isn't:
“Should we advertise on ChatGPT?”
The real question is:
“Are we ready for a world where customers ask AI what they should buy before they decide where to click?”
That's the conversation I think every marketer should be having right now.
What do you think, will ChatGPT Ads become a serious competitor to Google and Meta in India, or will it remain a niche advertising channel?
